About the Gilluly-Kingsley Camp No. 120

Over the last thirty years, the camp has taken part in annual Memorial Day events at different cemeteries throughout Livingston County..

Members of the Camp continue to be involved in research and documentation of Civil War veterans’ graves registration in Livingston County and actively support other Camps in their efforts when local resources are requested.

"Livingston County North", the last of the four in the series of books profiling the biographies of the men and officers from Livingston County that participated during the Civil War was published by brother Richard Hutchins and his wife Mary before he passed away in 2025. These hardcover books sell for $15.00 each. The set of four for $50.00 covers all four regions of the county. Please contact any member of the camp for more information. When they are gone, they are gone. The Hutchins had also created a small book covering all GAR memorial artillery in cemeteries and parks and courthouse lawns. This book is also $15.00. There are six left and no more will be printed.

Camp members participate in outreach activities by assisting local historians and associations develop and tell the stories of veterans of the Civil War in their newsletters and by appearing as guest speakers at community meetings. We are currently surveying cemeteries for repair work, and flag holder placement throughout the county. The camp is assisting the Hartland Historical Society and the Hartland Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Florence B. Dearing Museum in the purchase and placement of a simple marker for a known War of 1812 soldier (John Williams) buried in the village. Attempt to ask the VA for a headstone have failed due to a lack of pension papers.

Gilluly-Kingsley Gilluly-Kingsley Camp No. 120 meets at the American Legion Post 141, 3265 W. Grand River, Howell, MI, on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00PM, April to October. Enter through the side entry and use elevator to the basement. Please contact the Commander or the Camp Secretary for more up-to-date information.
