About the George W. Anderson Camp No. 58
The
George W. Anderson Camp No. 58 of the Department of Michigan, SONS
OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR (SUVCW) is named in honor of
the first GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC (G.A.R.) Post established in
Clinton County, Michigan. The George W. Anderson Post 58 was organized
on April 25, 1882. Geo. W. Anderson was a DeWitt resident who served
in the 23rd Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He was taken prisoner at
Cumberland Gap, Tennessee in December of 1863. Private Anderson
was held at Andersonville Prison in Georgia where he died of starvation
on June 27, 1864. He rests in grave No. 2546 of the National Cemetery
there. Post No. 58 had over 90 members throughout its history and
was the very spirit of patriotism for over 25 years. The declining
health and number of its members led those few left, to disband
Post No. 58 in 1909.
The current George W. Anderson Camp No. 58, SUVCW., was chartered
on July 17, 1995. Serving greater Clinton County, the Camp meets
on he 3rd Monday of January, March, May, July and November, and
the 4th Monday of September. Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and are
held at the DeWitt V.F.W. Post No. 671 on Old U.S. - 27, just South
of Dill Road, in Dewitt Township. Anyone with an interest in our American Civil War
heritage is welcome to attend.
Camp No. 58 preserves and promotes the memory and traditions of
the G.A.R., with cooperation of other veterans' organizations, to:
identify and mark graves of Civil War soldiers and sailors buried
in Clinton County; participate in Memorial Day (Decoration Day)
Parades and Ceremonies across the county; restore and maintain veterans'
monuments & memorials.
The George W. Anderson Camp No. 58 offers Member, Associate, and
Junior memberships in the SUVCW. For more information please e-mail
Secretary/ Treasurer Richard
Williams. Thank you for your interest.

members of the Allied Orders in front of the Post Hall on West Main
Street in DeWitt. The reason for the inverted colors is not known,
and we welcome suggestions as to why it might have been so displayed.
In protest? As a gesture of solidarity for a national emergency?
